Located in Yunnan Province of China, Lijiang offers a perfect blend of history, culture, and scenic breathtaking natural landscapes. It truly is one of the most beautiful places I’ve visited in China, so much so I had to go back a second time! This guide contains all of the best things to do during your visit.

Old Town of Lijiang
Walking through the cobblestone streets of Lijiang Old Town feels like stepping back in time. The best thing to do is wander around and get lost in the maze of narrow alleyways and hidden courtyards. I recommend finding a hotel in Lijiang’s Old Town for the duration of your stay. Within the ancient town, you can find endless restaurants, book stores, vintage shops and cute rooftop cafes. Find somewhere to sit down, slow down and take in your surroundings!
Jade Dragon Snow Mountain
An absolute highlight of Lijiang is Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Also known as Yulong Snow Mountain, it’s truly an awe-inspiring experience and the best thing to do in Lijiang! I recommend booking this tour – it includes pick up from your hotel, transport to the mountain and around other attractions including Blue Moon Valley.
Take the cable car up to Glacier Park at the top of the mountain and don’t forget to buy some oxygen because you will be 4860m above sea level! The temperature at the top can get very cold, so remember to wear warm clothes. The stunning views are absolutely unforgettable.
Blue Moon Valley
Just at the foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain lies Blue Moon Valley, and it’s every bit as magical as it sounds. The turquoise lakes, surrounded by lush greenery and white sandbanks, are surreal. This location is included in the previously mentioned tour. You can easily spend a long time here, soaking in the scenery, capturing photos of the crystal clear waters that mirror the sky. It really feels like paradise.
Shuhe old Town
Another old town just outside of Lijiang, but less crowded and with it’s own unique charm. The stone bridges and canals reminded me of Lijiang, but felt more laid back. I actually visited here on Chinese New Year’s Day, usually a day to spend with family, but all of the locals were still so welcoming. Here you can find craftsmen creating everything from silver jewellery to traditional Naxi textiles.
Black Dragon Pool
A peaceful retreat with free entry just outside of the Old Town, with probably the best view of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain from the city! The reflection of the mountain in the pool is iconic, and the small pavilions and bridges add to the charm. It’s a photographer’s dream spot, and it’s actually not been busy both times I visited!
Jade Water village
Jade Water Village is a fascinating place, rich in cultural significance. It’s known as a spiritual site for the Naxi people, with sacred spring water and lush surroundings. This isn’t usually on the list of best things to do in Lijiang, and it’s a bit further away from the city, but I really enjoyed my time here and learning about the God of the Naxi people.
Lion Hill
Lion Hill is located on the outskirts of the Old Town, and provides panoramic views of Lijiang. Hike up the hill to Wangu Pavillion, where you’ll find the best views! You can see the rooftops of the Old Town, stretching out towards the surrounding mountains. It’s the perfect spot to appreciate the beauty of this incredible city.
Baisha Old Town
Baisha Old Town is another quieter, more relaxed alternative to Lijiang’s bustling Old Town. It’s known for the ancient Baisha Frescoes, which offer a glimpse into the rich history and artistry of the Naxi culture. I enjoyed wandering around, chatting with locals, and sitting in the cute cafes for hours. It’s a great place to learn more about the traditions that have shaped the region.
Lijiang is a destination that stays with you long after you’ve left. Its blend of rich history, stunning natural beauty, and unique Naxi culture makes it a truly unforgettable experience. Whether you’re exploring its ancient towns or marveling at the mountain landscapes, Lijiang offers something special for every traveler.
